Australia receives confirmation of Oscar Jenkins’ survival in Russian captivity

The Australian government has received reassuring news from Moscow regarding the status of Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old teacher captured last year while serving as a combatant in Ukraine. According to a statement released by Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Wednesday, authorities in Russia have confirmed that Jenkins is alive and currently in custody.

Confirmation amid grave concerns

This announcement comes after earlier reports raised fears that Jenkins may have been killed while imprisoned, prompting the Australian government to express “grave concerns” regarding his welfare. Wong emphasized the ongoing apprehensions surrounding Jenkins’ situation, stating, “We still hold serious concerns for Mr. Jenkins as a prisoner of war.”

The Australian government has called upon Russia to ensure Jenkins’ release and has reiterated its position that the Russian Federation is obligated to treat all prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law, as outlined by the Geneva Convention. This agreement protects prisoners from acts of violence and intimidation.

Calls for accountability and proof

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese previously indicated that the government was “urgently seeking” confirmation of Jenkins’ status. In response to the latest news, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia expressed cautious optimism, describing it as “good news” but urging Moscow to provide “video proof” of Jenkins’ well-being.

Oscar Jenkins is believed to be the first Australian captured as a prisoner of war while fighting in Ukraine. A video that emerged in December showed Jenkins, with his hands bound, being interrogated by Russian forces. During the video, he identifies himself as a teacher and soldier, living between Australia and Ukraine, and is questioned about whether he is receiving payment for his participation in the conflict.
