Beloved drag performer Bianca Castro-Arabejo, widely recognized as Jiggly Caliente, has tragically passed away at the age of 44, as confirmed by her family. The news comes after Caliente underwent a leg amputation due to complications from a severe infection.

Caliente initially gained fame as a contestant on the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2012, where her vibrant personality and humor made her a standout among the contestants. She later expanded her influence by serving as a judge on the Philippine spin-off of the show and playing the role of Veronica in the acclaimed series Pose, which explored New York’s LGBTQ ball culture.

Family and tributes

In an emotional statement shared on Instagram, Caliente’s family expressed their deep sorrow:

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Bianca Castro-Arabejo, known to the world and cherished by many as Jiggly Caliente.”

They revealed that she passed away early Sunday morning, surrounded by her loved ones. The family honored her remarkable spirit, stating that she will be remembered for her “infectious energy, fierce wit, and unwavering authenticity.”

In their tribute, they noted, “She touched countless lives through her artistry, activism, and the genuine connection she fostered with fans around the world. Though her physical presence is gone, the joy she shared and the space she helped create for so many will remain forever.”

A legacy of love and inspiration

The drag community mourns the loss of Caliente, with fellow queens sharing heartfelt messages online. Laganja Estranja, who competed in the sixth season of the show, described her as a “kind, caring soul,” while Baga Chipz from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK acknowledged her as “one of the kindest, sweetest souls I’ve ever met.” Cheryl The Queen added, “We will love you forever and always Jiggly,” and Tia Kofi reflected on Caliente’s supportive nature, saying she was someone she often turned to for advice and companionship.

Born in the Philippines in 1980, Bianca moved to New York City’s Queens neighborhood as a child. Her stint on RuPaul’s Drag Race left an indelible mark, with memorable moments, including a famous catchphrase coined during a heated exchange with fellow contestant Lashauwn Beyond, which resonated throughout subsequent seasons. After her initial success, Caliente ventured into acting, appearing in notable sitcoms like Broad City and Search Party.

In 2016, she publicly came out as transgender, embracing her identity and inspiring many within the LGBTQ community. Caliente returned to the Drag Race franchise as a competitor in the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars in 2021 and took on the role of judge in the third season of Drag Race Philippines. Prior to her passing, her family had disclosed that she was dealing with a serious health setback, which had resulted in the loss of “most of her right leg.”
