Chinese factory under investigation for producing childlike sex dolls

by editor

A factory in China has come under scrutiny from local authorities for its production of “childlike” sex dolls. Following a formal investigation, the factory has been instructed to cease operations immediately.

The dolls, which can be customized, were reportedly available for purchase on prominent online shopping platforms and social media sites. In response to growing concerns, Chinese state media outlet The Paper reported that officials are treating the matter with “great importance”.

Global backlash against childlike sex dolls

Recently, online retailer Shein, originally established in China but now based in Singapore, took decisive action by banning the sale of all sex dolls worldwide. This decision followed public outrage over the availability of dolls resembling children.

“We have strengthened our keyword blacklist to further prevent attempted circumvention of product listing restrictions by sellers,”

the company stated at the time. This move indicates a growing trend among e-commerce platforms to address the sale of controversial products. Other sites, including AliExpress, have faced backlash for listing similar items and have been investigated by French authorities.

International efforts to regulate the market

According to reports from November, AliExpress took action against a seller who had denied offering sex toys on the site despite repeated allegations. The company’s actions reflect a heightened awareness and responsibility among online retailers concerning the marketing of inappropriate products.

Sweden has also announced intentions to combat the sale of these dolls. Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Gronvall emphasized that online commerce companies must take accountability for their offerings. She stated,

“I now start from the principle that electronic commerce companies assume their responsibilities and do everything possible to end the marketing of sexual dolls that resemble children.”

She further warned that if significant progress is not observed, the government may seek legislative measures to tackle the issue.

Technological advancements in artificial intelligence have significantly streamlined the customization of sex dolls purchased online, with some even featuring conversational abilities. The factory currently under investigation is reportedly one of several located in southern Guangdong province engaged in the production of custom dolls displaying characteristics of “childlike pornography”.
