Drone strike in El-Fasher, Sudan kills over 60 amid ongoing humanitarian crisis

by editor

In a devastating attack on a displacement shelter in El-Fasher, a city under siege in Sudan, at least 60 individuals have lost their lives due to a drone strike. This incident highlights the dire situation in a region struggling to survive amidst prolonged conflict.

Details of the attack

According to the local resistance committee, which consists of citizens and activists, the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the Dar al-Arqam camp, situated within a university, employing two drone strikes along with eight artillery shells. The committee condemned the assault, stating,

“Children, women and the elderly were killed in cold blood, and many were completely burned,”

a sentiment echoed by the AFP news agency.

Humanitarian crisis deepens

The RSF has effectively surrounded El-Fasher for the last 17 months, aiming to seize control of the Sudanese army’s final stronghold in the Darfur region. The situation has escalated to what the resistance group describes as “beyond disaster and genocide.” As the bombardment continues, residents are grappling with severe shortages of food and medical supplies, exacerbating the already alarming hunger and disease rates throughout the city.

Since 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in conflict triggered by a fallout between top commanders of the RSF and the Sudanese army. This power struggle has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises the region has faced in recent history. As El-Fasher endures relentless assaults, the international community is urged to take note of the urgent need for assistance and intervention to alleviate the suffering of its inhabitants.
