Explosion near Red Fort leaves Delhi reeling from tragedy

by editor

On a typically busy Monday evening near the Red Fort metro station in Delhi, chaos ensued when a loud explosion shattered the atmosphere. A powerful blast originating from a car claimed the lives of at least eight individuals and injured over twenty others, leaving in its wake a scene of devastation that was palpable for kilometers. The intensity of the explosion caused nearby vehicles to be severely damaged, fueling concerns and shock among residents and visitors alike.

Shockwaves felt across the city

In one of Delhi’s busiest districts, located between the renowned Chandni Chowk market and the historic Red Fort, the explosion disrupted the evening’s hustle and bustle. Local resident Mohamed Hafiz, who lives just 200 meters away from the blast site, recounted the moment: “My house shook, and we all rushed outside, thinking it was an earthquake.” The chaos was overwhelming — people fled in panic, cars were engulfed in flames, and countless injured individuals lay on the street. “There was blood everywhere. People were in shock. The scene was too disturbing – I could even see body parts,” he recalled.

As news of the explosion spread through local media, fear and panic took hold of the city, prompting police to declare a high alert and neighboring states to follow suit. A palpable tension was evident as officers conducted thorough searches of vehicles entering the city from surrounding suburbs, adding to the sense of disbelief that such an event could occur in a city deemed one of the safest in India.

Community in distress

At Lok Nayak Hospital, where many of the injured were taken, a crowd gathered, anxiously seeking information. Among them was Mohammed Azghar, whose brother was in the vicinity when the blast occurred. “My brother has been missing since the explosion. We haven’t had any contact with him,” he lamented, expressing his desperation for news. “I just want some news – good or bad.” His brother, an electric rickshaw driver, remains unaccounted for, adding to the anguish felt by many families in the area.

Returning to the scene of the explosion, the usually vibrant streets were eerily deserted, with only security personnel and journalists present. The remnants of the blast told a grim story: mangled vehicles and bloodstained roads bore witness to the violence that had erupted. Local business owner Ram Singh expressed his concerns about the long-term impact on his livelihood: “I earn daily and I am worried how I might feed my family. I hope a sense of security soon returns. I hope the police will be able to restore trust fairly quickly. And I hope this never happens in our city ever again. We are shaken but we should overcome this.”
