Families demand clarity following Air India crash preliminary report

by editor

In the aftermath of last month’s tragic Air India crash, which claimed the lives of 241 individuals aboard and 19 on the ground, families of the victims are seeking answers. Imtiyaz Ali, who lost his brother, sister-in-law, and their two young children, expressed his disappointment upon reviewing the preliminary report released early Saturday in India. He described the findings as lacking depth, saying it “reads like a product description.” Ali emphasized his desire for clarity regarding the crash’s cause, stating, “This matters to us. We want to know exactly what happened.”

Details of the crash and preliminary findings

The ill-fated Air India Flight 171 took off from Ahmedabad on June 12 and crashed shortly thereafter into a suburban neighborhood. According to the preliminary report, the aircraft’s fuel supply was cut off mere seconds after take-off. However, the details surrounding this sudden shutdown remain unclear. The cockpit voice recordings indicate a conversation between the pilots, with one asking, “why did you cut off?” to which the other responded that he “did not do so.” A final, comprehensive investigation report is anticipated within the next year.

Personal stories of loss

Shweta Parihar, who lost her husband, Abhinav, in the crash, articulated a profound sense of loss. Her husband had changed his travel plans and unexpectedly boarded the flight back to London, a decision that ultimately led to tragedy. Expressing her grief, she stated, “For those of us that have lost loved ones, we’ve lost them; they are not coming back.” The loss has had a significant emotional impact on their 11-year-old son, Vihaan, who now refuses to fly with Air India, a testament to the trauma he has endured since the incident.

Similarly, Badasab Syed mourned the loss of his younger brother, Inayat, along with his family. He had hoped for clarity from the preliminary report but instead found himself grappling with more questions than answers. The mention of the pilots discussing the fuel control switch left him puzzled. “We don’t know, what does that mean? Was this avoidable?” he questioned, reflecting the frustration many families feel regarding the lack of information.

As the grieving families await further updates, the emotional toll of their losses continues to weigh heavily on them. Badasab noted the particularly devastating impact on his elderly mother, stating, “Losing her son and grandchildren has made her weak. I think she is not able to even tell us how she feels.”
