A devastating mass shooting at a hostel in Saulsville township, just west of Pretoria, has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including a three-year-old child. The incident, which unfolded early on Saturday morning, also left fourteen others injured as gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets on a gathering of patrons.

Details of the incident

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the attack occurred around 04:30 local time (02:30 GMT) when at least three unidentified gunmen entered the venue and began firing indiscriminately. Tragically, among the fatalities were not only adults but also a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.

“I can confirm that a total of 25 people were shot,” Mathe stated, highlighting the severity of the violence.

The motive behind this horrifying attack remains unclear, and as of now, no suspects have been apprehended. This incident adds to a troubling pattern of mass shootings that have plagued South Africa, a nation grappling with high crime rates.

Challenges with illegal liquor establishments

Mathe described the hostel as an “illegal shebeen,” pointing to the broader issue of unlicensed liquor establishments that have become hotspots for violence. “We are having a serious challenge when it comes to these illegal and unlicensed liquor premises,” she noted, emphasizing that many mass shootings occur in such locations. Innocent bystanders often find themselves caught in the crossfire during these tragic events.

In response to the escalating violence, law enforcement has initiated a significant crackdown on illegal liquor outlets. Between April and September of this year, authorities closed down 12,000 such establishments and arrested over 18,000 individuals in a bid to enhance public safety.

South Africa’s murder rate remains alarmingly high, with the latest figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reporting 45 killings per 100,000 people for the years 2023-2024. Additionally, police statistics indicate that approximately 63 people were murdered daily during the first half of the year, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to combat crime in the country.
