Netanyahu scheduled to meet Trump at the White House next week

by editor

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received an invitation to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, as announced by the Israeli Prime Minister’s office. Although the Trump administration has not yet confirmed the visit, it is anticipated to occur on February 4.

According to Netanyahu’s office, this meeting marks the first time a foreign leader has been invited to the White House during Trump’s second term. While aboard Air Force One, Trump mentioned that Netanyahu would be traveling to Washington “very soon,” although he did not specify a date.

Ceasefire agreement and regional implications

The scheduled meeting takes place amidst a six-week ceasefire currently being observed in Gaza, following a deal reached between Israel and Hamas to halt hostilities. Trump has taken credit for facilitating this ceasefire, asserting on Truth Social that the “epic” agreement was made possible due to his victory in the recent presidential election.

Trump stated, “The success of this agreement is a testament to the strength of our foreign policy and the relationships I have built in the region.”

This high-profile meeting is also set against the backdrop of Trump’s recent comments advocating for Egypt and Jordan to accept Palestinians from Gaza, a proposal that has faced considerable backlash from both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, as well as rejection from the governments of Jordan and Egypt. This suggestion has been a long-standing agenda among hardline right-wing factions within Netanyahu’s administration.

Background of the conflict

The ceasefire deal came after an intense conflict that erupted following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This assault resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 251 others, taken back to Gaza as hostages. In response, Israel launched a significant military offensive, leading to the reported deaths of over 47,200 Palestinians, predominantly civilians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
