Pope Francis treated for complex respiratory infection in hospital

by editor

Pope Francis is currently receiving treatment for a “complex clinical situation” at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, according to a recent announcement from the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on Friday for treatment and evaluation of his bronchitis symptoms.

Details of the Pope’s health condition

In an update provided on Monday, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis is battling a “polymicrobial infection” affecting his respiratory tract, which necessitated a change in his medical treatment. Prior to his hospital admission, the Pope exhibited bronchitis symptoms for several days and had assigned officials to deliver pre-prepared speeches at various events.

Hospitalization and ongoing care

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni addressed reporters, stating that the pontiff remains in good spirits despite his health challenges. The Vatican issued a brief statement summarizing the Pope’s condition, noting:

“All tests carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospitalisation.”

As a result of his current health status, the Pope’s weekly general audience, typically held on Wednesdays, has been cancelled.

Over the weekend, the Vatican reassured the public, stating that the Pope is stable and has been advised to take “complete rest” to facilitate his recovery. Consequently, he was unable to participate in his usual Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square or preside over a special mass for artists, which was planned to celebrate the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.

Last Wednesday, the Pope had requested a priest to read part of his speech due to difficulties stemming from his illness. He also engaged in meetings at his Vatican residence last week in an effort to rest and recuperate.

Pope Francis, who has led the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years, has faced a series of health concerns over the years. Notably, he spent three nights in the same hospital in March 2023 for bronchitis treatment and was compelled to cancel a planned trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit in December of the same year due to another illness. The pontiff has a history of health issues, including having part of one lung removed at the age of 21.
