Robert Mugabe Jr. faces drug possession charges in Harare court

by editor

Robert Mugabe Jr., the son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, has recently appeared in a Harare court, facing charges related to drug possession. The 33-year-old was apprehended on Wednesday morning after reportedly driving against the traffic on a one-way street, as outlined in court documents.

During the encounter with law enforcement, police searched a black sling bag that Mugabe Jr. was wearing and allegedly discovered two small sachets of cannabis. Following his arrest, authorities announced the apprehension of five additional individuals believed to be part of a “syndicate linked to him.”

Details of the arrest and defense response

Mr. Mugabe’s legal counsel, Ashiel Mugiya, indicated their intent to contest the charges, disputing the veracity of the police report. The defense claims that the drugs were found in a vehicle occupied by three other individuals and that the amount discovered was only 0.02g of cannabis, in stark contrast to the police’s assertion of 2g with a street value of $30 (£22).

Upon his arrival at the magistrates’ court on Thursday, Mr. Mugabe was casually dressed in joggers and a red cap, engaged with his phone. He was surrounded by supporters and was not handcuffed during the proceedings. The court has remanded him in custody while awaiting a bail ruling scheduled for Friday.

Previous legal troubles and family dynamics

In connection with the alleged syndicate, police reported finding 25 sachets of marijuana and six ecstasy pills during their investigation. Authorities have pledged to continue their inquiries into the matter.

This incident marks another encounter with the law for Mr. Mugabe Jr. Earlier in 2023, he was arrested following an incident in which he was accused of damaging property and assaulting a police officer during a party in Harare. He subsequently reached an out-of-court settlement with the complainant, who was identified as a friend.

Robert Mugabe Sr. passed away in 2019 at the age of 95, two years after resigning from a lengthy 37-year rule over Zimbabwe. His leadership was characterized by a struggle against white-minority rule during the 1970s, but he later faced criticism for employing violence in elections and leading the nation into economic decline. Following his departure, Emmerson Mnangagwa took over the presidency, a move that stirred tensions between the Mugabe family and the new administration, especially as Grace Mugabe, Robert’s widow, had ambitions to succeed her husband but was marginalized by Mnangagwa’s supporters. Despite earlier conflicts, Mugabe Jr. has since reconciled with Mnangagwa, even attending a rally in 2022 where he was warmly welcomed back into the ruling Zanu-PF party.
