Tragedy struck Kyiv as a recent Russian missile and drone assault claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, with numerous others sustaining injuries. This alarming update was conveyed by Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, who highlighted the devastation inflicted on residential neighborhoods, hospitals, and sports facilities.
Details of the attack
Among the deceased, six individuals were reported to have died within a high-rise building in the capital. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko, confirmed that an additional 22 people were injured in the city due to the attack. The recent surge in aerial assaults from Russia has particularly targeted various Ukrainian cities, raising significant concerns.
On the night of the attack, the Ukrainian air force reported a staggering onslaught involving 352 Russian drones and 16 missiles aimed primarily at the Kyiv area. Footage released by Ukraine’s emergency services depicted the panic of residents being evacuated from a burning high-rise building, illustrating the chaos that unfolded.
Impact on local infrastructure
Local authorities indicated that the damage was not limited to residential buildings; an entrance to an underground metro station was also affected, leading many residents to seek shelter there throughout the night. In addition to the fatalities in Kyiv, a drone strike on a hospital in the southern city of Bila Tserkva claimed another life.
This incident adds to the trauma already experienced by the capital, which is still recovering from previous attacks that occurred on Tuesday, resulting in at least 28 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The current assault marks one of the most significant strikes on Kyiv since the onset of Russia’s full-scale military aggression, which began in February 2022.
“It is a period of deep sorrow for our city,” said Mayor Klitschko, emphasizing the need for unity and resilience in the face of ongoing threats.
