Thirteen individuals sustained injuries, two of them critically, when a vehicle collided with spectators during a demolition derby event in southeastern Australia. The incident occurred on Saturday night in the town of Walcha, as confirmed by the New South Wales police.

The car was participating in a race that is part of the annual Walcha Motorcycle Rally when it veered off course, crashing through a barrier and into the grandstand area. This particular event, a demolition derby, involves drivers deliberately ramming their cars into one another, adding an element of excitement to the motorsport spectacle.

Injuries and Response

Brendan Moylan, the local member of parliament for Northern Tablelands, took to social media on Sunday to update the public, stating that nine individuals remain hospitalized, but “all are now recovering.” Initial reports had suggested that nine people were injured, with ages of those affected ranging from 20 to 75 years. Among the critically injured was a 54-year-old man.

According to police, the 27-year-old driver of the car had been involved in a previous collision on the track just prior to the accident, which is now under investigation. The authorities are working meticulously to determine the precise circumstances that led to this alarming event.

Community Reactions

The Walcha Council expressed its shock and dismay regarding the incident in a statement shared on the Walcha Motorcycle Rally’s Facebook page. They emphasized their commitment to cooperating with authorities to thoroughly investigate the situation, stating that making comments before the inquiry is concluded would be “inappropriate.”

“My thoughts are with everyone affected,”

Moylan expressed gratitude towards emergency responders and bystanders for their prompt and professional actions at the scene. Additionally, Barnaby Joyce, the former deputy prime minister and current New England lawmaker, also conveyed his sympathies through social media, remarking on the unfortunate turn of events, stating, “Such a sad end to such a great event.”

The Walcha Motorcycle Rally is characterized as a “grassroots event for motorcycle enthusiasts,” showcasing the local community’s passion for motor racing.
