In a devastating incident in the Dominican Republic, a roof collapse at a popular nightclub has resulted in the loss of at least 44 lives and left over 150 individuals injured. The incident occurred during the early hours of Tuesday while attendees were enjoying a concert by renowned merengue artist Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set discotheque in Santo Domingo. Rescue operations are currently underway, with efforts focused on locating individuals trapped beneath the debris.

Juan Manuel Méndez, the director of the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), reported that around 400 search and rescue workers have been mobilized to assist in the recovery efforts. Méndez emphasized that rescue teams continue to search for survivors under the remains of the collapsed structure. Ambulances have made over 100 trips to hospitals in the area, often transporting multiple patients at a time. Despite the tragedy, Méndez expressed hope that many individuals buried under the fallen roof might still be alive.
Eyewitness accounts and emergency response
The Jet Set nightclub, known for hosting vibrant dance music concerts on Monday nights, was filled with patrons when the roof collapse occurred around 1 a.m. Eyewitness accounts detail alarming moments before the incident, with one video capturing a man near the stage remarking, “something fell from the ceiling,” just moments prior to the collapse. Following the noise, chaos ensued, as captured by another recording where a woman is heard frantically shouting, “Dad, what’s happened to you?”
Among those trapped in the debris was Rubby Pérez himself, as confirmed by his daughter. Fernando Soto, Pérez’s manager, stated that the singer was found alive, although details regarding his medical condition remain unknown. Additionally, former Major League Baseball star Octavio Dotel was also reportedly present at the nightclub during the collapse and has since been rescued; however, his current status is yet to be clarified.
