Trump announces new weapon shipments to Ukraine amid ongoing conflict

by editor

Donald Trump has announced the United States will deliver additional weapons to Ukraine, following a prior decision to pause the shipment of crucial military supplies to Kyiv. This announcement came during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that Ukraine is “getting hit very hard.”

Shift in U.S. Military Support

Trump indicated that the upcoming shipments would primarily consist of “defensive weapons” aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s efforts in the ongoing conflict. Last week, the U.S. had reportedly suspended deliveries of vital equipment, including Patriot air defense missiles and precision artillery shells. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had urgently called for the continuation of these shipments, emphasizing the necessity of U.S. Patriot systems as “real protectors of life.”

The White House had previously justified the pause by stating it was made “to put America’s interests first” as part of a review regarding military support to other nations. However, Trump’s apparent reversal on this decision seems to coincide with a recent escalation of attacks by Russian forces, particularly drone and missile strikes targeting Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv. Local officials reported that one attack last Thursday resulted in the third death in the city.

Continued Support for Ukraine

During a news conference with Netanyahu on Monday, Trump emphasized the necessity for Kyiv to have the means to protect itself, stating, “We’re going to send some more weapons. We have to… They’re getting hit very hard now.” He also expressed disappointment with Putin, noting, “I’m disappointed that President Putin has not stopped.”

The Pentagon confirmed the plans to send additional defensive equipment, stating, “at President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops.” This news comes as a welcome relief to Ukraine, which had warned that the initial pause could hinder its ability to counter increasing airstrikes and Russian advances along the front lines.

Last week, Zelensky reported that he had discussed potential air defense opportunities with Trump, agreeing to collaborate on enhancing the protection of Ukrainian airspace. The conflict in Ukraine has persisted for over three years, following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, with ceasefire negotiations largely stalled despite multiple attempts by Trump to mediate.

After a recent conversation with Putin, Trump noted that “no progress” had been made towards ending the conflict, adding, “I don’t think he’s looking to stop.” Following this call, Ukraine reported that Russia launched a record 539 drones and 11 missiles targeting Kyiv and other regions, including Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Chernihiv. Zelensky has urged international allies, particularly the U.S., to increase pressure on Moscow and implement stricter sanctions.
