Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Elon Musk over the billionaire’s intentions to establish a new political party. Speaking to the press on Sunday prior to boarding Air Force One, Trump expressed his disapproval, stating,
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party. It’s always been a two-party system and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion.”
Musk, who had been hinting at this plan for several weeks, announced via X over the weekend the formation of the America Party, aiming to challenge the existing framework of the Republican and Democratic parties, which he terms the “Uniparty.” This new venture marks a significant departure from Musk’s previous close alliance with Trump, during which the Tesla CEO led the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), an initiative focused on reducing federal expenditure.
Musk’s vision and Trump’s concerns
Elon Musk has been vocal in his criticism of government policies that contribute to the rising national debt of the United States. He noted that while the newly formed party might eventually endorse a presidential candidate, the immediate priority for the next year would be on influencing the House and Senate.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on the same day, Trump conveyed his disappointment regarding Musk’s recent actions, stating,
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Trump specifically targeted Musk’s proposal for an “Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate,” arguing that it would mandate the populace to purchase electric vehicles in an unreasonably short timeframe.
Legislative backdrop and implications
Trump’s recent tax and spending legislation, which he signed into law on July 4, eliminated previous tax incentives for electric vehicles. He reiterated his longstanding opposition to Musk’s EV mandate, providing insights into the rationale behind excluding such vehicles from the recent law. “People are now allowed to buy whatever they want – Gasoline Powered, Hybrids (which are doing very well), or New Technologies as they come about – No more EV Mandate,” he stated.
Furthermore, the legislation entails increased allocations for border security, defense, and energy production, albeit accompanied by contentious cuts to healthcare and food assistance programs. The backdrop of Musk’s political party announcement coincides with ongoing tensions, as he has openly criticized Trump’s spending strategies during their recent exchanges.
