U.S. President Donald Trump is poised to receive a luxurious jumbo jet from the royal family of Qatar, designated for his use as a presidential aircraft. Reports indicate that the aircraft will require retrofitting before it can be operational, and the U.S. government plans to inspect the jet for any potential spying devices.
Unique arrangement for Trump’s presidential library
In an unprecedented move, this aircraft will also be donated to Trump’s presidential library upon the conclusion of his term, according to sources. The announcement of this generous gift arrives just as Trump prepares for a visit to Qatar, marking his first major foreign trip of his second term in office.
Concerns over legality and ethics
The value of the jet and the circumstances surrounding its acquisition are likely to spark legal and ethical debates among critics. Presently, the White House operates a fleet that includes two Boeing 747-200B aircraft, specifically customized for presidential functions with advanced communications systems and amenities such as a stateroom, office, and conference room, as noted by the U.S. Air Force. These aircraft have been in service since 1990 and 1991.
Typically, Air Force One planes are transferred between administrations. According to the National Archives, only the Reagan presidential library possesses an Air Force One jet, which has served seven presidents before its donation.
Reports suggest that Qatar is offering a Boeing 747-8 to the Trump administration, a significantly newer model that has been transformed into a “flying palace.” Boeing had been tasked with supplying the White House with updated aircraft; however, Trump criticized the company earlier this year for delays. His administration had initially negotiated for two specialized 747-8 planes during his first term, but the aircraft are not expected to be available until 2027 or 2028.
“No, I’m not happy with Boeing. It takes them a long time to do, you know, Air Force One, we gave that contract out a long time ago,” Trump stated in February. “We may buy a plane or get a plane, or something.”
During his first term, Trump maintained a strong diplomatic rapport with Qatar, which included a notable announcement in 2019 regarding the country’s significant purchase of American aircraft. Moreover, Qatar has a history of gifting private jets to other nations, including a luxury plane presented to Turkey in 2018.
