Authorities in Uganda are currently investigating the death of Abubakar Lawal, a 29-year-old Nigerian professional footballer. Lawal reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala, where he had gone to visit a friend from Tanzania.
According to police reports, Lawal was taken to the hospital after the incident, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His friend, identified as Omary Naima, had briefly left him in her room—part of the mall’s premises—while she prepared tea just before the fall occurred.
Tributes pour in for the talented striker
Lawal played as a striker for Vipers Sports Club, a local team that expressed deep sorrow over his “untimely passing.” Having joined Vipers in July 2022, he previously played for AS Kigali in Rwanda for two years. This year, he played a crucial role in helping Vipers secure both the league and cup titles.
“Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous,” Vipers Sports Club stated in their tribute.
His former club in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, also paid tribute, mourning the unexpected loss of their ex-player. “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest,” they said.
Local Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza expressed his grief, saying, “It’s hard to take in that you’re no more Lawal. A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed, bro.”
Investigation into mysterious circumstances continues
As the investigation unfolds, local media have reported conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances of Lawal’s death, with some initially stating that he had died in a motorcycle accident. However, police have clarified that they are working diligently to ascertain the exact details of the incident.
“Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” a police spokesperson said. They have also collected several personal items belonging to Lawal, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the police stated, assuring the public that they are committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragic event.
