Following the conclusion of a 30-hour ceasefire proclaimed by Moscow, Ukraine’s military reported a series of drone attacks across multiple regions late Sunday night. The truce, initiated by President Vladimir Putin, ended at midnight Moscow time, leading to heightened tensions and renewed hostilities.
Air raid alerts issued across multiple regions
In response to the escalating threat, Ukraine’s air force activated raid alerts in several areas, including the capital Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Residents were advised to seek shelter immediately as the threat of drone strikes loomed.
In Mykolaiv, local Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych reported that “explosions were heard,” although the extent of any casualties remains unclear. As of now, Russia’s military has refrained from commenting on the reported attacks, while both parties accused each other of breaching the terms of the temporary ceasefire.
International responses and ongoing conflict
Amidst the renewed violence, US President Donald Trump expressed hope for a resolution, stating that “hopefully Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week,” though he did not elaborate further. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the conflict has resulted in significant territorial changes, with Moscow currently controlling approximately 20% of Ukraine, including the annexed Crimea peninsula.
The toll of the conflict has been devastating, with estimates suggesting that hundreds of thousands of individuals, predominantly military personnel, have been killed or injured on both sides since the onset of hostilities in 2022. Last month, Russia outlined a comprehensive list of conditions regarding a ceasefire that had been tentatively agreed upon by the United States and Ukraine, further complicating the path to peace.
