Ukraine’s security forces have reportedly dismantled a spy network allegedly operated by Hungarian intelligence, focusing on gathering sensitive information regarding the country’s defense capabilities.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the detention of two individuals, accused of espionage activities aimed at acquiring intelligence on Ukraine’s air defense systems. The SBU emphasized the significance of this operation, stating,
“For the first time in Ukraine’s history, the Security Service has exposed a Hungarian military intelligence network that was conducting espionage activities to the detriment of our state.”
Espionage activities detailed
According to the SBU, the spy network was allegedly established by Hungary’s military intelligence with a specific focus on tracking the locations of air defense systems situated in the western Zakarpattia region, which borders Hungary. This area is critical for Ukraine’s defense strategy, and the potential implications of such espionage are significant.
Furthermore, the accused were also investigating public sentiment among local residents, presumably to gauge reactions in the event of a potential Hungarian incursion into Ukrainian territory. Notably, the SBU did not suggest that the espionage efforts were directly benefiting Russia.
Details of the arrests
The detained individuals, identified as a man and a woman with prior military backgrounds in Ukraine, were apprehended at their residences. Reports indicate that during the search, the authorities seized phones and other materials that provided evidence of their espionage activities.
Both suspects now face charges of treason, which could result in severe penalties, including life imprisonment. The Hungarian government has yet to respond to these serious allegations, despite Hungary being a member of both the European Union and NATO—entities that traditionally support Ukraine.
