A significant fire has broken out at an oil depot near Sochi, a popular resort on the Black Sea, which Russian officials have attributed to a drone attack from Ukraine. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar region, reported that debris from the drone struck a fuel tank, prompting a response from 127 firefighters who worked throughout Sunday morning to contain the blaze.
In the wake of the attack, the airport serving Sochi, which famously hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics, briefly halted its flight operations.
Russian strikes escalate in Ukraine
In related developments, Russian forces targeted the city of Kherson in Ukraine, where a missile strike resulted in the death of one individual, according to local officials. The neighboring city of Mykolaiv saw seven people injured and multiple homes destroyed during the assault. Ukrainian authorities previously reported a total of seven fatalities resulting from Russian attacks over the weekend, particularly affecting the Kherson and eastern Donetsk regions.
Escalating drone warfare
Russian authorities claimed that the drone attack on the Sochi refinery was part of a larger wave of assaults launched by Ukraine over the weekend, with installations in central Russian cities such as Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh also targeted. Reports from Voronezh’s regional governor indicated that one drone strike injured four individuals.
“Ukraine has not commented on the strikes. It has been targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure in retaliation to Russia’s sustained bombardment of Ukraine’s energy grid throughout the war.”
Russia’s defense ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 60 of these over the Black Sea region. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force reported an assault involving 83 drones and seven missiles, claiming to have downed 61 of them. The strikes reportedly hit eight locations, resulting in damage and further escalating the conflict.
In Kherson, regional head Oleksandr Prokudin announced a call for partial evacuation after the key Ostrivsky bridge was struck again on Sunday morning. This bridge connects the Korabel island district to the rest of the city and had already suffered significant damage from earlier Russian attacks. Approximately 1,800 residents still reside in the district, facing increasing danger.
The recent Russian offensive marks a particularly grim week for civilians in Ukraine. An attack on Kyiv last Thursday claimed at least 31 lives, during which Ukrainian officials reported the launch of over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, making it one of the most devastating assaults on the capital since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In response to the escalating violence, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for increased international sanctions against Russia. U.S. President Donald Trump also condemned Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, indicating that further sanctions against Moscow may be forthcoming. In previous statements, Trump had set deadlines for Russia to cease military operations, suggesting severe tariffs on Russian exports if the situation does not improve.
