An Air India flight heading to London Gatwick Airport tragically crashed shortly after take-off in western India, resulting in the loss of nearly all 242 individuals on board, as confirmed by the airline. Among those on the flight were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. The local community has also been affected, with reports indicating that at least eight residents near Ahmedabad, including four medical students, lost their lives in the incident.
One survivor, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the crash. As further details emerge, the identities of several victims have been confirmed, shedding light on the personal tragedies resulting from this disaster.
The Nanabawa family
Among the victims were the Nanabawa family from Gloucester, comprising Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa Vorajee, and their four-year-old daughter, Sara. In a heartfelt family statement, they expressed their deep sorrow, stating, “we are still coming to terms with the enormity of what has happened.” Imam Abdullah reflected on their character, saying, “They were widely loved and deeply respected,” highlighting Akeel’s generosity and Hannaa’s warmth, along with Sara’s joyful spirit. This tragedy has profoundly affected their community, as noted by the Gloucester Muslim Society, which extended its condolences and support.
Other victims
Adam Taju, 72, and his wife Hasina, 70, were traveling back to London with their son-in-law, Altafhusen Patel, aged 51. Their granddaughter, Ammaarah Taju, expressed her disbelief and sorrow as her family gathered to receive news about the crash.
Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, a married couple who operated a spiritual wellness center in London, also perished in the accident. They shared a light-hearted moment on Instagram just before boarding the flight, leaving their loved ones in shock over their loss.
The Syed family from west London—Javed and Mariam, along with their two young children—were also on the flight. Mrs. Syed was employed at Harrods, while Mr. Syed worked in hospitality.
Ajay Kumar Ramesh was another passenger, sitting next to his brother, the surviving Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who reported that he was “fine” but had no updates about Ajay’s condition.
In a notable loss, Vijay Rupani, the former chief minister of Gujarat, was confirmed dead in the crash. He had served in this role from 2016 to 2021 and was a member of the ruling BJP party.
Among the cabin crew was Singson, whose family is desperately seeking information about her status. Her cousin, T. Thanglingo Haokip, highlighted that she was the sole provider for her family, adding to the tragedy of her loss.
Finally, Raxa Modha and her two-year-old grandson, Rudra, were on board, reportedly flying back to England for a memorial service for Raxa’s late husband, who passed away from cancer in April. Wellingborough’s Mayor Raj Mishra extended heartfelt condolences to their family and emphasized the community’s need to come together in this difficult time.
