Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema faces backlash amid political tensions

by editor

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema is grappling with increasing discontent as he faces a challenging political landscape just nine months ahead of the elections. Recent incidents, including a shocking episode where he was physically targeted with stones while attempting to deliver a speech, have heightened tensions within the country.

Footage of the incident, which occurred during a rally in the Copperbelt province, has sparked outrage among Zambians across the political spectrum. Many have condemned the violence directed at the president, revealing a growing frustration with the current administration. In his first press conference in 18 months, Hichilema defended his government’s policies and pointed to his administration’s efforts in economic recovery and power generation, stating,

“This level of hatred is shocking, you can see and even touch the venom.”

He urged citizens to foster love and unity during these tumultuous times.

Economic challenges amidst political strife

Despite his optimism, the president’s message may not resonate with many citizens who continue to face daily hardships. Simon Mwila, an opposition candidate for the mayoral seat in Lusaka, expressed concerns that Hichilema has lost sight of the people’s needs, saying that the public has resorted to throwing stones instead of celebratory gestures.

Critics, including Zambian historian Sishuwa Sishuwa, have argued that Hichilema has strayed from his original principles since taking office. According to Sishuwa, the president has adopted some of the same practices he once opposed under former leader Edgar Lungu. Hichilema, however, stands by his record, particularly in addressing the debt crisis inherited from the previous administration and stabilizing national finances.

During a recent visit to Chingola, Hichilema had hoped for a warmer reception, especially after announcing significant financial aid for local market reconstruction efforts. Instead, he was met with hostility, forcing him to abandon his scheduled address amid chaotic scenes. Authorities have attributed the unrest to “unruly members of the public,” with police arresting over 27 individuals for violence and looting.

Political reforms and public dissatisfaction

The president has acknowledged the frustration surrounding ongoing power shortages, which have severely impacted citizens’ lives. He described the energy crisis as a result of recent drought conditions that have hindered hydroelectric power generation. Hichilema promised that his government would prioritize solar and thermal energy projects to address these challenges, stating that this situation serves as a critical wake-up call.

With the August 2026 elections on the horizon, Hichilema’s accomplishments, such as reducing inflation to just below 12% and improving Zambia’s credit rating, seem overshadowed by persistent issues like high living costs and unemployment. Economist Trevor Hambayi recognizes the progress made in financial management but asserts that the lack of solutions to the energy crisis and joblessness remains a pressing concern for ordinary Zambians.

In the past, Hichilema was a staunch advocate for democratic principles, but his presidency has faced allegations of adopting repressive measures, including the controversial Cybersecurity Law. Critics argue that this legislation is being misused to suppress dissent and target political opponents, a stark contrast to his previous stance against such practices.

As he prepares the nation for impending electoral battles, Hichilema is also pushing for a constitutional review to increase parliamentary representation, a move reminiscent of the proposals he once opposed. He argues that it’s essential for equitable resource distribution, yet critics are mobilizing against it, planning national prayers to voice their dissent.

As public sentiment grows increasingly restless, Hichilema has called for patience, asserting that meaningful progress necessitates time. However, with the tangible frustrations manifesting in public protests and stone-throwing incidents, the president must navigate these challenges carefully as the electoral clock continues to tick.
