1,500 soldiers on standby amidst escalating protests in Minneapolis

In a significant development, approximately 1,500 soldiers are poised for potential deployment to Minneapolis, according to a US defense official. These troops, who are currently stationed in Alaska, may be called upon by President Donald Trump as tensions rise due to ongoing demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city.

The decision to deploy these soldiers has not yet been finalized. Local officials have been advocating for peaceful demonstrations in light of recent events, particularly following the tragic death of US citizen Renee Good, who was shot by an ICE agent earlier this month.

Military readiness and legal implications

The soldiers belong to the 11th Airborne Division, based at Fort Wainwright. Last week, President Trump indicated he might invoke the Insurrection Act, a seldom-used law that permits the deployment of active-duty military personnel for law enforcement purposes within the United States.

In a related legal ruling, a federal judge has imposed restrictions on the crowd control methods that ICE agents can utilize against demonstrators in Minneapolis. Judge Katherine Menendez determined that federal agents are prohibited from arresting or using pepper spray against peaceful protesters, including those monitoring ICE activities.

Community response and ongoing protests

In response to the escalating situation, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has mobilized the state’s National Guard and placed them on alert. Additional law enforcement personnel have also been dispatched to Minneapolis in anticipation of the anti-ICE protests.

The unrest in the city has been fueled by a series of actions taken by ICE, following the unfortunate incident involving Renee Good on January 7. Good was present as a legal observer during an ICE operation, but the Trump administration controversially labeled her a “domestic terrorist,” igniting further outrage.

“Justice for Renee,” chanted demonstrators across the nation, as protests erupted in various cities in response to her death.
