Indonesia plans to restrict social media access for users under 16

In a significant move to safeguard the youth, Indonesia is set to impose a ban on social media and various online platforms for users below the age of 16. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to regulate children’s access to digital spaces and promote healthier online interactions.

Platforms affected by the ban

The planned restrictions will initially target major platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox. This comprehensive approach underscores the concern for the potential negative impacts of social media on young minds.

Indonesia’s pioneering stance

Highlighting the importance of this legislation, Hafid stated,

“This will start with platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox,”

adding that the ban positions Indonesia as “the first non-Western country to delay children’s access to digital spaces according to age.” This proactive measure reflects a growing trend among nations to reconsider how digital content is consumed by children and to address the challenges posed by unregulated access to online environments.
