Rosita Salvador Mabuiango, known as a “miracle baby” for her extraordinary birth during a natural disaster, has died at the age of 25 after a prolonged illness. Her sister, Celia Salvador, shared the news, expressing deep sorrow regarding Rosita’s passing, which was attributed to a battle with the blood disorder anaemia.

The tragic story of Rosita’s birth captured the attention of many when she was born in a tree, where her mother, Carolina Cecilia Chirindza, had climbed to escape the devastating floods that struck Mozambique in February 2000. This incident became a defining image of the national disaster, which claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands as the Limpopo River overflowed its banks.

Rosita’s remarkable journey

As the floodwaters rose, Carolina and other villagers sought refuge in trees, enduring harrowing conditions for several days. Carolina recounted the ordeal, stating, “It was a Sunday afternoon about four o’clock, and the waters began rising… We had nothing to eat, and the children cried and cried, but we could do nothing for them.” In the early hours of Wednesday, as she went into labor, a South African military helicopter spotted the family, leading to their rescue.

The images of Carolina and her newborn daughter being airlifted to safety became emblematic of hope amid catastrophe. Later in 2000, they traveled to the United States to raise awareness about the plight faced by Mozambicans during the floods.

A legacy remembered

Upon confirming Rosita’s death, President Daniel Chapo expressed his condolences, stating, “She was a symbol for girls in Mozambique,” highlighting her significance in representing resilience and hope. Throughout her life, Rosita grew up in Chibuto, the same area where she was born, eventually graduating from high school and becoming a mother herself five years ago.

Her passing has reignited discussions about the state of healthcare in Mozambique. Political analyst Charles Mangwiro remarked that Rosita’s death serves as a “wake-up call for the government to improve service delivery in the entire health system in the country.” Despite recent recruitment efforts, the healthcare system remains under pressure, struggling with shortages of essential medications and resources.

Chibuto Mayor Henriques Machava announced that arrangements are being made to honor Rosita’s memory, with the municipality taking responsibility for the funeral.
