Ukraine has vocally condemned a new series of Russian strikes that occurred overnight, resulting in one fatality and injuring 23 others. This escalation of violence coincides with the resumption of peace talks involving the US, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
Recent attacks and their implications
Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, characterized the recent assault as “brutal,” stating it has affected both the civilian population and the peace negotiations. This incident prompted discussions among delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the US in Abu Dhabi, marking the first trilateral talks since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
According to reports, significant progress has been made during the discussions, although the pivotal issue of territorial disputes remains unresolved. The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that one individual lost their life and four others sustained injuries due to the strikes. Additionally, Kharkiv’s mayor reported 19 injuries from a sustained assault on the city during the early hours of Saturday.
Humanitarian impact and ongoing negotiations
As the three-day negotiations continue, Sybiha emphasized that the recent attack underscores that “Putin’s place is not at the board of peace, but at the dock of the special tribunal.” In a related statement, US President Donald Trump mentioned last week that Putin had accepted an invitation to join the ‘Board of Peace,’ a group dedicated to resolving global conflicts, although the Russian leader has yet to confirm this.
In Kyiv, three of the injured individuals have been hospitalized, and critical infrastructure has faced significant damage, leaving approximately 6,000 buildings without heating as temperatures plunge below freezing. Following the attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked, “The main target of the Russians was the energy infrastructure.”
In Kharkiv, the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, reported that the strikes resulted in injuries to 19 individuals, with both a maternity hospital and a shelter for displaced persons sustaining damage. At present, Russia occupies about 20% of Ukraine, including key areas in the eastern Donbas region, while the Kremlin continues to demand significant territorial concessions from Ukraine, which the latter firmly rejects.
After the initial day of discussions, Rustem Umerov, who is leading the Ukrainian delegation, took to social media to share insights on the talks. He stated: “The meeting focused on the parameters for ending Russia’s war and the further logic of the negotiation process aimed at advancing toward a dignified and lasting peace.”
