Jost is being investigated in connection with social fraud and human trafficking in the transport sector through letterbox companies in Romania and Slovakia. A letterbox company is a business that establishes its domicile in one Member State with a mailing address while conducting its activities in other Member States.
The Jost Group has initiated legal action to prevent a further 281 vehicles from being seized, according to the daily. The prosecutor’s office has so far declined to elaborate on the ongoing investigation.
Between 2014 and 2016, the company recruited about 1,100 truck drivers from Eastern Europe to work in Belgium under the labour conditions obtaining in their home countries. As a result, Belgian social security and the truckers may have been defrauded of an amount valued at 55.3 million euros.
As part of the investigation, four company officials, including CEO Roland Jost, have already been held for questioning and conditionally released.
