One in 10 workers cycles and drives to work

Cars remain Belgians’ favourite way to go to and from work, according to the fourth mobility barometer produced by Acerta, but more and more people combine driving with another means of transport.
Close to 11.1% of workers combine driving and cycling, according to the human resources service provider.

In 2018, some 65% of private-sector workers drove cars each day between their residences and places of work, a 2.5% reduction compared to the previous year: 11.88% combined driving with another mode of transport, mostly bicycles (11.1%).

In 2018, some 26.37% of workers regularly opted for the bicycle, an 8.9% increase over 2017, while 14.12% used bicycles exclusively.

About 8% of workers regularly took the train, bus or subway, while 6.28% used only public transport to get to and from work.

The survey also showed that the situation with regard to company vehicles remained much the same as in 2017. In 2018, 19.6% of employees had company vehicles. “In previous years, a clear increase in the number of company vehicles could be observed,” noted Benoît Caufriez, director of Acerta Consult. “The status quo in this area is really a novelty.”

“We see two possible explanations for that,” he explained. “The favourable economic situation has led, on one hand, to a significant increase in terms of occupation in favour of employees who carry out implementation tasks and who therefore do not traditionally receive company vehicles. On the other hand, newly recruited workers have a more critical opinion of this mode of transport than their predecessors.”

The survey is based on real data on workers employed by more than 40,000 private-sector businesses, Acerta explained.
