Saliva collection to be used to curb driving under the influence of drugs

by editor February 15, 2019
February 15, 2019
The Cabinet of Ministers on Friday approved a royal decree allowing the use of saliva collection devices to determine whether a motorist is driving under the influence of drugs.
Justice Minister Koen Geens hopes the instruments can be used from 1 April to curb the growing number of persons driving while consuming drugs or after having done so.

Saliva collection devices differ from saliva tests. They do not require a doctor going to the scene in the event of a positive test to do an additional blood test. Only certified laboratories will be able to test the devices.

Members of the police will receive training in the use of the saliva collection kits.
