Soldiers not properly insured if they die during an operation in Belgium

by editor
Belgian soldiers taking part in operations in Belgium are not properly insured in case of death, VRT reported on Sunday.
This mainly affects soldiers who are part of an operation called “Vigilant Guardian”.

However, they are insured when it comes to exercises, typical work situations and operations abroad.

“This unequal situation must be resolved by a bill as soon as possible after the elections”, Defence minister Didier Reynders said via a spokesperson.

He added that a bill proposal submitted a year ago did not get the necessary backing.

“If one of our soldiers has a problem before we find a solution, the Defence Minister will do all he can do intervene”, the spokesperson said.

VRT said it would seem legislators did not envisage the possibility that Belgian soldiers would be involved in operations on Belgian soil. This has now happened with Operation Vigilant Guardian, which was launched after the Paris attacks.
