Three demonstrators belonging to an anarchist group were detained for disturbance to the public order after they broke off from a Youth for Climate march in the city on Friday.
Reports say the detainees were part of a group of some 50 individuals who identify as anarchists.
As the march approached its final destination in Gare du Midi, the anarchists reportedly broke off from the main group and headed towards Place de la Bourse down the Anspach Boulevard.
“They tried to enter the McDonald’s in [Place de la] Bourse to carry out a demonstration but they were stopped,” a police spokesperson told La Dernière Heure.
“On the windows of a Pizza Hut in the square, the inscriptions ‘F*ck the police’ were written down,” the spokesperson added. “But they were immediately erased. No act of vandalism was committed.”
According to the spokesperson, the group then organised a sit-in outside before being surrounded by police.
Brussels and Ixelles police units said they identified and searched 53 individuals in total, out of which three thought to have been the instigators were put under administrative detention.
The age of the detainees was not made public.
