Travellers warned to expect massive delays this weekend

by editor February 25, 2019

Heavy traffic is expected for those leaving Belgium on Friday evening due to Carnival holidays and winter sports departures, according to traffic monitor group Touring.
Traffic should be reasonable in the direction of France, but heavy traffic is expected for Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Touring sees a high risk of queues in Belgium from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. Seeing as holidays have already begun in France, traffic there should be manageable, with the exception of some traffic near Paris on Friday and Saturday in the Northeast and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps region.

Touring also announced heavier traffic in Germany, with an orange level on Friday and red on Saturday, especially in the south towards Austria and Switzerland.

In these countries, as well as in northern Italy, Saturday will be the day to avoid for departures. The biggest traffic problems are expected between 10 am and 6 pm. By Sunday,  congestion is no longer expected.

For those returning from vacation, Saturday 9 March is already classified as red in France in the northern Rhône-Alps-Auvergne region. Traffic will be especially difficult between 9 am and 4 pm. In northern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, queues are expected on Saturday.

On Sunday, the traffic should be fluid in all countries, except in Belgium where the biggest traffic problems should occur on Sunday afternoon and evening (orange).

A previous report by Touring found that Belgium had the equivalent of 66 complete days of traffic in 2018.
