Belgian coronavirus test lab hit by cyberattack

by editor

Hackers are demanding a ransom to unblock computers at an Antwerp coronavirus testing laboratory, according to local press.

The lab, which processes 3,000 tests a day, around 5 percent of the Belgian total, was hit by the cyberattack Monday, the Gazet Van Antwerpen reported.

The hackers’ aim was to blackmail the lab rather than steal any data, according to the lab’s IT officials quoted in local press.

The lab has notified local authorities which are now investigating the incident.

The hack is just the latest to target coronavirus infrastructure. The European Medicines Agency was the victim of a cyberattack earlier this month, while British vaccine producer AstraZeneca says it was hacked by a North Korean-backed group in November.
