New flash floods hit Belgium

Several parts of Belgium were hit Saturday night by flooding that washed away cars, damaged homes and infrastructure, and provoked gas leaks and fires, according to local reports.

The surge in water levels was triggered by heavy rains and came just over a week after flash floods that killed at least 37 people in Belgium and dozens more in neighboring Germany.

Experts and government officials have warned such events will strike with greater frequency because of climate change.

Among the worst hit areas on Saturday were the southern city of Namur, the historic nearby town of Dinant and parts of northern Antwerp province.

“The situation in Namur is more severe than it was last week, with several flooded streets, several neighborhoods in the municipality under water and serious consequences for many households who need to be relocated,” Namur Mayor Maxime Prévot was quoted telling the daily Le Soir.

However, there were no immediate reports of casualties.
