For a while, many Europeans saw the coronavirus outbreak as something happening to another continent. Then, Europe was at the center of a global pandemic.

On Wednesday, the number of deaths from the virus in Europe exceeded those in China for the first time, and the bloc is failing to flatten the curve of infections.
