U.S. President Donald Trump recognizes “the right of Greece to enforce the law at its borders,” according to the government in Athens.
A statement from the office of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he had spoken with Trump on the phone on Monday about the increasingly tense situation on the border with Turkey.
Greece has said it will stop accepting new asylum applications for a month and step up border security measures as an increasing number of migrants arrive through Turkey, which announced it would no longer stop migrants from crossing into the EU.
On Tuesday, the presidents of the European Council, European Commission and European Parliament will travel to the Greek-Turkish land border in a show of support for Athens.
